"First off, they use the worst AI preregistration software. Be ready to answer extremely personal questions multiple times since they will bombard you with emails and texts to do it over and over again. 30 minutes before my appointment they call saying they would like a telehealth appointment instead. It takes me 50 minutes to get to the office. I took 3 hours of sick leave for this appointment. 10 minutes after my appointment is supposed to start they tell me the doctor is picking up their children because of an active shooter at the school. With the same breath they ask me to pay for the appointment. I question the doctors ability to give me her full attention while running late, picking up children during stressful time, and the fact you’re already late to appointment. I decline to pay and meet due to the unprofessionalism. At this point, I’m incredulous at how greedy and unprofessional this doctor and office is. How can you tell me you’re rescuing your children while still wanting to meet with a patient? How can you tell me that you are giving me your best? Never experienced such immature unprofessional behavior from a MD. "

"I had been seeing Dr. Stevenson since 2008 for Restless Legs Syndrome. In the spring he sent me home with a device to see if I had sleep apnea. The device malfunctioned. I told him about this and he told me that I had sleep apnea and needed to buy a cpap machine from the company he was going to refer me to. I repeatedly asked him to order a sleep study in their sleep lab. The last time I had a sleep study done in their sleep lab was several years ago and it did not indicate that I had sleep apnea. Dr. Stevenson refused to order the sleep study. Instead he sent me a certified letter dismissing me as his patient and only gave me 30 days to find another doctor and said that after that he would no longer approve medication refills. I did some research online and found that those are heavily sedating medications and for the last several years have asked him to prescribe less sedating medications. He always refused. My new doctor just evaluated the results of the sleep study he ordered for me recently and told me that I do not have sleep apnea. Dr. Stevenson has always been very condescending with me when I made any kind of request. If I tried to ask him a question he would always dismiss me with a rude response. I always experienced him as arrogant."

What is Sleep Medicine?

Sleep medicine is the medical field that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of conditions related to sleep and rest. This can include difficulty sleeping well at night or problems with daytime sleepiness. Sleep medicine specialists treat patients of all ages who need better rest.

When people think of sleep disorders, they often think of insomnia. That's one kind of sleep disorder, but there are several others. In addition to insomnia, a sleep medicine specialist may treat conditions such as:

Treatments may include medication, light therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, or CPAP therapy. CPAP, which stands for continuous positive airway pressure, is one of the most commonly prescribed treatments. These tiny machines have a tube and mask and blow a stream of air over the face at night, helping patients with snoring or sleep apnea to breathe easily and sleep more soundly.

One important tool often used in sleep medicine is the sleep study or polysomnogram, where patients sleep either in a lab or at home with a monitoring device. The sleep study allows doctors to measure the quality of sleep over an entire night, check for various sleep problems, and identify breathing disorders such as sleep apnea. If performed in a lab, patients will arrive and spend the night sleeping in a bed similar to one in a hotel room. Patients may have electrodes attached to their head and chest to monitor their breathing, oxygen levels, brain waves, and heart rate. Technicians collect the information, which physicians can use to identify and diagnose disorders that have been interrupting sleep.

Not getting enough rest at night makes people feel terrible, can make it difficult to do the things they need to do, and can even put people at higher risk for physical and mental health problems. Feeling tired all the time can be a huge quality of life issue.
