Autoimmune Diseases

An autoimmune disorder happens when the immune system mistakenly attacks the tissues of its own body, causing symptoms of illness. There are more than 80 different types of autoimmune disorders. While some are very rare, others are fairly common. Combined, autoimmune disorders are one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States, affecting approximately 24 million people.

A properly working immune system identifies foreign substances in the body that might cause illness, such as bacteria and viruses. The immune system then creates antibodies which attack the foreign substances, neutralizing them and keeping the body safe. In people with autoimmune disorders, something goes wrong with this process. For reasons that are not fully understand, the immune system creates antibodies to attack the patient's own tissues.

Symptoms of an autoimmune disorder depend on which tissue is being attacked by the immune system, but common symptoms of autoimmune disease include fever, fatigue, and a general feeling of just not being well. Autoimmune disorders are more common in women than in men, and they may run in families. Autoimmune disorders can affect various parts of the body such as blood vessels, connective tissue, endocrine glands, joints, muscles, red blood cells, skin, and many others.

It is common to have more than one autoimmune disorder at a time. Most are chronic, or life-long illnesses, although they may come and go in flares. Treatment for autoimmune disorders depends on which part of the body is being attacked. For example:

  • A type 1 diabetic whose pancreas has been damaged will need insulin.
  • A person with Hashimoto's whose thyroid has been damaged will need replacement thyroid hormones.
  • Someone with Sjogren's syndrome will need eye drops and mouth rinses to replace tears and saliva.

Many autoimmune disorders of all kinds are treated with immune-suppressing medications, such as corticosteroids (e.g. prednisone) to reduce the effect of the immune system.

1st time eye Floater. My eyecare provider at Canyon Park was on vacation. Need to be seen within 28 hours. They did have a triage nurse call me back immediately to access the severity. There was one appt in Seattle but I'm too nervous to drive to Pill Hill. They got me in the next day with Dr Ferea within the 48 hours after floaters first appeared. My fault I didn't realize on Day 1 what they were or how serious which is why when I called for an appointment I only had a 24 hour window left to be seen. Dr Ferea was an excellent doctor and her medical assistant was the best eye care medical assistant I have seen at PacMed. She was able to help hold my eyelids to get the necessary pictures. I can't emphasize how extraordinary it was to get the pictures so easily. It really helped eliviate a difficult part of a stressful situation. I was very comfortable with Dr Ferea's skills too.

During the past several years for which Dr. Farea provides my medical care (eye treatment), I truly believe that I am a recipient of the best medical service ever provided. She displayed constant close attention to the critical task of my eye check-ups, quickly identified medical problems while meticulously monitored my eye medical issues. She ensured that I'm referred to various eye specialist necessary for resolution of eye issues. She seems very knowledgeable. She does not explain the tests I have, nor what they mean. She seems rushed. On one occasion, I asked questions and wanted a more detailed explanation; she replied: "You haven't been paying attention to me!" I felt disrespected. I am looking for a new optometrist, but am afraid to leave the practice, because all my records are with her. I will ask my primary care doctor for a recommendation.

I had a very good experience with her medical assistant. During my vision exam she noticed that my polarized glasses were not sitting on my nose properly and this was affecting my how well I was seeing the eye chart. She then adjusted my glasses and this gave me proper results. Doctor Farea was great. She listened attentively to my concerns and referred me to an eye surgeon for further treatment.

Dr. Farea is a very nice doctor. I have been seeing her for eye care for quite sometime now, and she is understanding and very pleasant to talk to and tells me what have to be done if there's any. Dr. Farea's tech assistant is very nice and understanding to elders like me who is very sensitive. I really like her a lot. To my opinion both the doctor and her tech are oustanding. They are the best.

I had a non urgent but important question about the safety of an over-the-counter eye cosmetic. I sent the question through My Chart Messaging. Not only did Dr. Farea respond to me in a helpful and timely way, but she reassured me at this appointment that she had consulted with a specialist to do so. This was very reassuring and seemed above and beyond the call of duty!!!!

This was my first time to see this care provider. I thought her professionalism was good, but her manner was brusque, rushed and a little condescending. She did not seem to be willing to answer my questions or deal with my concerns. I am almost prepared to return to my previous care provider, even though it would be more expensive because he is not in my insurance network.

Have no issues to report on my visit. Easy to make the appointment, staff and medical staff are courteous and professional. Dr. Farea is very thorough and explains everything clearly. I've some issues with my eyes over the past 5 -6 years and glad that I found a dedicated eye specialist who has helped navigate my eye Issues and get the appropriate care.

Dr Farea always seems rushed & while she will answer questions she seems bothered being asked. She does a good job including details in the wrtitten report but doesn't go over any of this during visit so I end up google searching for details.Bottom line Dr Farea could definitely improve her doctor -> patient communication skills.

She is well informed of my vision related history, and keeps my primary care doctor of exam results as needed. I prefer scheduling appointments with her despite the need to travel from West Seattle to Northgate for appointments with her.
