Headache

Headaches are dull or sharp pains that occur in regions of the head and face. Headaches occur in many different forms and vary in location, severity, and duration. They are not necessarily a sign of an underlying illness and often resolve on their own. However, headaches can present significant day-to-day discomfort. The most common forms of headaches include:

  • Migraines: one of the most prevalent types of headache, migraines typically last from two hours to three days, causing a throbbing pain on one side of the head. Nausea, sensitivity to bright lights, fatigue, and blurred vision all may accompany migraines. While migraines have no known cure, medications and lifestyle modifications may ease symptoms. Avoiding behaviors that may trigger migraines such as lack of sleep or loud, repetitive noises can improve headaches.
  • Tension headaches: also known as stress headaches, these headaches are characterized by pain in the upper top part of the head and behind the eyes. Tension headaches are common and have no exact cause; however, certain practices may increase the likelihood of developing them. For example, wearing one's hair up in a tight hairstyle or wearing a restrictive hat can put pressure on the scalp, leading to a tension headache. Other causes of tension headaches may include alcohol or nicotine use, caffeine, teeth grinding, stress, overexertion, and eye strain. Some people find posture improvement, alternating sleeping positions, and neck exercise can alleviate tension headaches. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motren) and naproxen sodium (Aleve) may also reduce tension-headache pain.
  • Sinus headaches: this type of headache causes pain in the sinuses, but may progress to pain and pressure in the eyes, forehead, and cheeks. These headaches are often accompanied by nasal congestion, fatigue, and ache in the upper teeth and may or may not be caused by sinus infections or sinusitis (sinus inflammation). Some sinus headaches are allergic headaches, which arise from allergic triggers such as seasonal allergies (pollen allergies) or hay fever, causing sinus pressure and facial pain. Other symptoms of allergic headaches include nasal congestion, irritated or watery eyes, runny nose, and sneezing. Allergic headaches may be treated with antihistamine medications such as cetirizine (Zyrtec). Allergic headaches are common during pollen season, which is usually around springtime.
  • Cluster headaches: these headaches occur suddenly and cause stabbing, sharp pain from one eye down to the one side of the neck. They are often referred to as the most aggravating and painful type of headaches. Other symptoms of cluster headaches include nasal congestion, droopy eyelid, and enlarged pupil on one side of the face. In the past, it was widely believed that cluster headaches were caused by a bevy or "cluster" of multiple types of headaches, such as a combination of an allergic headache and a tension headache. Medical experts now recognize that cluster headaches are a separate and unique form of headache. Cluster headaches last for around twenty minutes to two hours. They may recur throughout the period of a day or several weeks, but usually dissipate within a month. Treatment for cluster headaches includes over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motren) and naproxen sodium (Aleve). Prescription Prednisone can help with swelling and Verapamil may reduce pain by relaxing the blood vessels.

Living with headaches is challenging; headaches can prevent people from fully enjoying life. Medical treatment and care in avoiding certain triggers can help those with headaches begin to feel normal once again.

Joint Injections

A joint is any area of the body where two bones connect. Due to injury or disease, the space between the two bones can sometimes become swollen and inflamed, which leads to pain and a loss of mobility. Injection and aspiration are two tools that physicians use to treat joint pain locally without needing to perform surgery.

Both injection and aspiration are techniques that involve inserting a needle connected to a syringe directly into the joint. Aspiration involves the removal of excess fluid, and injection is the placement of medication directly into the joint space via the needle. Both procedures may be performed at the same time. In both cases a local anesthetic may be used, the skin will be cleaned and disinfected, and then the needle will be inserted. In some cases, especially if the injection or aspiration is in a large and deep joint such as the hip or spine, ultrasound may be used to guide the needle to the exact location desired.

In some cases, irritation to the joint can cause fluid to build up so significantly that the joint hurts and can no longer move well. Aspiration removes some of the excess fluid and relieves the pressure. In addition, aspiration can be used to provide a sample of joint fluid if it needs to be examined microscopically for the presence of white blood cells, bacteria, or crystal formations.

Certain injuries and diseases that affect joints are inflammatory in nature, such as rheumatoid arthritis, tendonitis or gout. These diseases may be helped by the local injection of anti-inflammatory medications directly into the affected joint. In this case, corticosteroids such as methylprednisone are usually used. Relief from the pain may be felt right away and may last for weeks or even months.

In some cases, such as with osteoarthritis, the cartilage buffer between the two bones wears down and pain comes from bones rubbing against each other. In this case, injection of a lubricating agent such as hyaluronic acid may be beneficial. It provides a slippery cushion between the bones to relieve pain that can last for months.

Lung Issues

Every cell in the body requires oxygen to function and produces carbon dioxide as a waste product. In order to keep the body's tissues constantly supplied with fresh oxygen and to keep waste from building up, the lungs pump air in and out, even while sleeping or unaware. Unfortunately, diseases and disorders affecting the lungs are some of the most common medical problems afflicting people around the world. Some of the most common lung problems include asthma, COPD, pneumonia, and lung cancer.

Asthma is a chronic disease where swollen, inflamed airways make it hard to breathe. It is often brought on by specific triggers. While asthma is a common condition, affecting millions of people, it can also be serious and even fatal in severe cases. Treatment involves avoiding triggers and using inhaled corticosteroid medications.

COPD, or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, is the name given to two illnesses that both cause difficulty breathing: emphysema and chronic bronchitis. In emphysema, the air sacs of the lungs become damaged, while with bronchitis they become clogged with mucus. COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. It is almost always caused by breathing irritants into the lungs, such as smoking or heavy pollution.

Pneumonia is a lung infection that can be caused by bacteria, a virus, or fungi. Most healthy people recover from pneumonia in a week or two, but for some people pneumonia can be fatal. There are treatments available for pneumonia, but the best treatment is to prevent getting sick in the first place. People who are at risk should make sure they get a flu shot every year. There is also a vaccine available for the type of bacteria that causes pneumonia.

Lung cancer occurs when abnormal cells inside the lung grow into a tumor, destroying healthy tissue. Because it is so difficult to detect lung cancer in early stages when it has few symptoms, it is the deadliest form of cancer, responsible for the most cancer deaths both in the U.S. and worldwide. Most lung cancer is caused by exposure to tobacco smoke, but between 10-15% of cases are not linked to smoking.

Some problems with the lungs are minor and are not cause for concern. However if symptoms have lasted for a month or more, even if they are minor, it is worth checking with a healthcare professional. A cough, shortness of breath, or excess mucus production that lingers for weeks are all worth getting looked at.

Dr. Galgon is everything one could hope for in a physician. During my visit she was fully present, attentive, and empathetic as I described the various symptoms of my rather enigmatic ailment. She was then able to identify and ease my concern about a particular abdominal issue through palpation. And while she was very honest about the possible persistence of such a long-standing musculoskeletal problem, she recommended several further treatment options to help relieve it. In general, I think her osteopathic training and perspective fosters a very beneficial holistic and hands-on approach to care.

I've been thoroughly impressed with the level of care and professionalism provided. She genuinely cares about her work, and it's evident in every interaction. My doctor gave me a referral to get a nerve test by this doctor at Swedish. She had to have been one of the nicest doctors I have ever met. I was told this nerve test was going to be very uncomfortable and because of that I had missed three prior appointments. As I was sitting in the exam room, waiting for the doctor I was in tears just for fearing the unknown. As soon as she got in there and chatted with me for a couple minutes, I all of a sudden felt extremely comfortable and trusting of her, which is a rarity in my opinion, I would recommend her to anybody, I think she is a wonderful Dr.

Ortho/spine/sports is an extremely busy service. This caused some delay in seeing me in the office a couple of times, but not long. (I also have a medical background). She always involved med in the plan, and which direction moving forward. She was open to hearing my symptoms and ordered tests accordingly. After more than a year, several practitioners, she was the one that figured out my problem, was open and encouraging to keep her informed of any problems or questions. She is succinct without being rude, listening and offering up suggestions for treatment.

My doctor was thorough in gathing information regarding my current back injury, my medical history, and my concerns. She conducted a complete physical assessment regarding my injury. Without any diagnostic screens (xray or MRI), she gave me an overview of potential causes and informed me of next steps in my treatment regimen along with a referral for physical therapy. She will order an MRI as soon as it can be scheduled and we made an appointment for a follow up to review the MRI as well as my progress with the physical therapy.

Dr Galgon was such a great provider! She listened to my concerns, explored options and allowed me to ask any questions I had throughout discussing the treatment plan. She had ordered imaging which I needed to know more about the pain I am experiencing and requested to follow up once those were done. I would recommend people to go see her as she referred me to a physical therapist who she knows to do a good job. Thank you again! I am so happy with my visit

My top two concerns, I was seen for were not both addressed, and the one that was discussed was not addressed sufficiently to provide any new insights or care that would assist me in managing my condition. The doctor did not have any referrals or resources that were accessible to me for the condition we discussed. My second condition for the appointment was not addressed at all despite sharing the worsening shown by comparismng recent to historic MRI.

This was the first time I saw Heather. She reviewed my relevant history beforehand, asked questions including what my goals were, and gave me the advice I need to manage my condition and clarity on how she can support. This gave me confidence in her and gave me the support I was looking for. I really appreciate that sometimes care is guidance, teaching, and seeking to understandnot just a pill or a shot (although my medication was addressed.)

Dr. Galgon was a great referral from both my Primary doctor, but my foot doctor as well. She tried her best in the time available to go through my extensive health records, and then asked me all the pertinent questions, did some physical testing before deciding on MRIs, and potential injections, to ease my issues. I am sure Dr, Galgon, and I will have a good working relationship, as this was our first meeting.

Dr. Heather Galgon is an excellent Dr. She takes her time to listen to my comments about back pain l (due to a bulging disk & some scoliosis ) &" gives me a variety of suggestions & solutions. She provided a referral to the Swedish Pain Clinic and also to the Bone Health & Osteoporosis offices.She's worked w/me a number of times over several years. She & office staff are wonderful!
