Gynecologic Surgery

Gynecologic surgery is surgery performed on a woman's pelvic region. It is usually performed by an OB/GYN and can involve the bladder, rectum, or reproductive organs. Surgery in this area may be performed for many reasons, but the most common procedures include:

More and more, gynecologic surgery is moving towards the use of minimally invasive surgery. While it is not appropriate in every case, minimally invasive surgery can lead to less scarring, less blood loss, faster recovery, and a lower chance for infection. Minimally invasive gynecologic surgery may be performed with a laparoscope, a thin tube with a camera on the end that allows the surgeon to see inside the body. It may also be performed robotically, using even smaller tools and cameras that a surgeon controls from a computer. Robotic surgery allows even better vision, precision, and control than laparoscopic surgery.

Over the course of a lifetime, many women need pelvic surgery to stay healthy. Qualified gynecologic surgeons will have the right tools at their disposal to provide care with a minimum of discomfort.

I saw Dr. Christen for my prenatal care during my first pregnancy, and I immediately liked him for his calm, rational demeanor, and his willingness to view things with humor and spend as much time as needed explaining things to my satisfaction. I ended up developing preeclampsia at 39 weeks and had to be immediately induced, and he was there for me the entire time to explain developments, steps to take to help with the induction, medications required or advised, and all the options available to me. I never once felt pressured to do something I wasn't comfortable with, and he was respectful and lighthearted even when addressing serious medical concerns. He is meticulous about his work, and it is obvious he takes pride in his care of his patients. He even came back to check on me the following day on his day off just to see how I was recovering from an extremely difficult delivery. His support continued postpartum until the residual blood pressure issues I was experiencing as a side effect went away. I 100% trust this man and his medical expertise, and am excited to be his patient again for my second pregnancy.
