Heart Problems

The heart is one of the most important organs in the body. This smooth muscle expands and contracts rhythmically an entire lifetime, pumping blood to the lungs and then to every other cell in the body. When heart problems occur, it becomes difficult for the body to get the nutrients and oxygen it needs via the blood. So while there are a variety of illnesses and disorders that affect the heart, most of them cause weakness, exhaustion and shortness of breath. The most common heart conditions include heart disease, angina, arrhythmia, and valve disorders.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women. This includes coronary artery disease, heart attacks, congestive heart failure, and congenital heart disease. Some conditions, such as genetics, cannot be controlled. But there are many other things one can do to lower their risk for heart disease. Controlling high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, reducing or stopping smoking, exercising more and losing weight if needed, and eating a diet low in sodium can all protect the heart.

Angina is a squeezing type of chest pain that happens when the muscles around the heart don't get enough oxygen. It can be regular or infrequent. Usually, angina is caused by coronary heart disease. However, not all chest pain is angina. Chest pain can also be caused by a lung infection or panic attack, for example, so it is important to have any sudden pain checked.

Arrhythmia is the word for when the heart beats too fast, too slow, or irregularly with skipped beats. It can feel frightening, and depending on the type it can be dangerous, but in most cases arrhythmia is not serious and can be treated. It is very common, especially in older adults.

Heart valve problems can happen in any one of the the heart's four valves that keep blood flowing where it needs to go. Babies can be born with problems in their heart valves, or valves can be damaged by infections. The valves can stiffen and become less mobile, or they can stop closing properly and 'leak' when the heart beats. Valve problems can usually be repaired surgically.

Percutaneous Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAAC)

Percutaneous left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) is a device implantation procedure that reduces the risk of stroke for patients who have atrial fibrillation, a condition in which the heart beats out of rhythm. Atrial fibrillation causes blood to collect in the left atrial appendage, a small sac located in the top left chamber of the heart. The blood that collects in this appendage can form clots and cause stroke when pumped out of the heart.

To implant the device, a long, flexible tube, called a catheter, is inserted into a large vein in the groin and advanced to the heart. Once the tube reaches the left side of the heart, X-ray is used to guide a thinner catheter into the left atrial appendage. The tiny device is then passed through the tube and into the appendage. When the doctor has made sure it is in the right place, she takes the catheter out, and the procedure is completed.

This minimally invasive procedure usually requires a hospital stay of at least one day. Normal activities may be resumed within a few days. About 45 days following implantation, a test will be done to determine whether the device has closed the left atrial appendage. Check-ups have to be performed every year to make sure the device is in place.

Dr. Jones is the absolute best.he Is bright, keeps up with health research and advises based on science Instead of the Idiots following brain dead's RfK and his minions. A warm and caring professional is a Rare event in health care today. He not only "sees" his patients; he asks questions that shows he has reviewed their files, has thought about next steps, If any, and makes patients feel good about his recommendations. I can best sum this up by saying that In a health emergency related to cardiovascular Issues, he Is in the doctor I would want at my bedside..I hope all of the strikes and other "stuff" within Providence doesn't cause him to ever think about leavingHe Is a rare "gem" In the healthcare field and you should do everything possible to keep him in the Providence system For the rest of his professional life and to help him provide the type of outstanding health care that he routinely provides!

This provider was very personable and informative and I was impressed and reassured by his knowledge and confidence. He spoke pretty much non-stop and I was wishing that I had a tape recorder and/or a friend in the room with me to help me remember what was said. I learned a lot, but I also missed a lot. He came into the exam room and threw down a sheaf of papers and said "I've read your history" - call me paranoid, but it made me feel like he thought I was a hypocondriac. My family and friends and I were concerned that it took 3 months to get an appt with this provider, especially after a couple heart incidents/ER visits. The ER docs referred me to this provider. Again, I am glad to be under this provider's care, and I feel confident that he is a good doctor.

Dr. Jones is one of the absolute best doctors out there..He is warm, friendly, and he conveys a genuine interest in his patients..Importantly, he keeps up with relevant research and I trust his recommendations and decisions about a course of actionIn today's worldOf often distracted and distant cardiovascular doctors and other specialists, he is a shining star..I feel like he "sees me" and actually cares..I have recommended him to several friends..The only downside is that he is a bit difficult to get In to see- appointments are hard to get!!-a side effect of being an in demand physician at the top of his game..

Dr. Jones is fantastic. I look for a partner in my health care and he provides and allows that. He is caring, attentive and willing to answer any of my concerns or questions. He has a great sense of humor as well, which allows me to be humorous as well and helps put me at ease. Dr. Jones Was an outstanding doctor. This was my first appointment with him, and he was very clear on my symptoms and diagnosis, and I felt a lot more confident after having met with him. As a matter of fact, he went out of his way To personally set up a referral appointment with another doctor concerning an unrelated issue I was having with my back. Once we confirmed that I did not fit into the usual protocol for AFib patients and explored alternative treatments, we made progress in making a plan to improve my health and life as a whole person. Dr. Jones and his staff rapidly facilitated a video new appointment for me since I had recently had problems with my pacemaker. I had two ED visits this month for this although things now seem better. Dr. Jones impressed me as very intelligent, compassionate and willing to be involved. It was refreshing change from my poor experience with another electrophysioloogist.
