Alejandro Garcia, M.D. is the director of the Pediatric Burn Program, Pediatric Robotic Surgery Program and Pediatric MALS and SMAS Program at Johns Hopkins Children's Center. He also serves as the Co-Director of the Pediatric Surgical Colorectal Program, Assistant Program Director of General Surgery, and Surgical Director of the ECMO Program, which provides lifesaving support for infants and children with critical illnesses or injuries. He is also the Vice-Chair of Inclusive Excellence in the Department of Surgery. Dr. Garcia specializes in surgery for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, surgical oncology, pectus excavatum repair, minimally invasive lung resections, foregut surgery, and robotic surgery. He earned his undergraduate degree from Cornell University and his medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College. He completed his general surgery residency at Columbia University Medical Center, followed by a pediatric surgery fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Additionally, he completed an ECMO fellowship and conducted pediatric cancer research at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of New York-Presbyterian. Dr. Garcia is an active member of numerous professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, American Pediatric Surgical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, Society of University Surgeons, Latino Surgical Society, and the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization. His research focuses on brain injury in ECMO patients, minimally invasive colorectal surgery, congenital diaphragmatic hernias, outcomes research, inflammatory bowel disease, and chest wall deformities.
